Tigh a Chaolais is situated on the Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides.  The Isle of Lewis is accessible by plane or ferry.  Planes operated by Loganair arrive daily in the islands' main town of Stornoway from Edinburgh, Glasgow and Inverness.  There are two large supermarkets in Stornoway. You can also travel to Stornoway by Calmac ferry from the mainland port of Ullapool.  Alternatively, another Calmac ferry route takes you from Uig in Skye to Tarbert in Harris.  Please see their websites for details.  Both Stornoway and Tarbert are in driving distance of Tigh a Chaolais in Great Bernera.  Although the local council bus services run from Monday-Saturday, we would recommend that a car is very useful for travelling while staying in Lewis. Please note that the closest fuel pump is in the village of Breaclete on Great Bernera where there is also an electric vehicle charging point at the community centre.

Directions to Tigh a Chaolais:

Take the A859 South from Stornoway (or North if you are coming from Tarbert) and then turn onto the A858 going West until you reach Garynahine.  Then follow the signs for Uig and Great Bernera and take the B8011 to the Bernera road end where you follow the signs for Great Bernera and follow the B8059.  Once you cross the Bernera Bridge, follow the road straight through the village of Breaclete where you will find the Community Centre (which has a cafe and small grocery shop), Church and Doctor's surgery.  Carry straight on on this road towards Bosta Beach.  Once you reach the crossroads at the village of Tobson continue straight on to Croir.  A few minutes later you will pass the turn off for the village of Croir but continue straight on.  You will arrive at Tigh a Chaolais a few minutes later which is by the sea and one of the last two houses before you reach Bosta beach.
